When is a product organic?

An agricultural food product may only be called organic if the production process complies with legal requirements. The European government sets the rules, the organic farmers an producers comply with these and they are being audited and monitored by the certifying company. This way, the consumer can be sure that an organic product is really organic. Every company throughout the entire chain (except for the wholesaler) needs to be certified and comply with the legislation to be able to produce organic.

The Organic process from field to fork

 In order to harvest organic potatoes the ground on which an organic potato is grown must be ‘clean’. This excludes the risk of finding residues of previously used pesticides in the organic crops.

When growing the potato the land is cultivated according to organic regulations. As with regular potato field, the crop grown must rotate to control parasites, diseases and weeds, but also to maintain or increase the fertility and biological activity of the soil.

The raw material, seed potatoes, used to grow potatoes must be organic. And these seed potatoes may only be grown with permitted fertilizer. Organic production means that you close the cycle as much as possible. It is therefore important that you use manure from biologically certified animals.

Cultivation based on natural and mechanical measures to control weeds, for instance using natural enemies of parasites. Only allowed plant protecting products are used.


Throughout the whole chain the organic products must be transported and stored separately from non-organic products and also when processing the potatoes, to prevent contamination. Procedures must be in place and everything needs to be recorded for traceability. This is essential to all activities.

How can I see if the product is organic?

A company that produces organic pre-packed consumer products will indicate this by putting the organic logo on the packaging, use of the European quality mark is mandatory. The organic quality mark may only be used by certified companies on organically certified products.
